SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: AN APPRAISAL OF NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES ON RESIDENTS OF NINTH MILE CORNER ENUGU, NIGERIAN.

ABSTRACT

Increasing prospects for industrial growth is a major front in attaining green economy through sustainable use of resources. Industrialization is vital to economic growth and development of any country. It has negative consequences, therefore there is need for sustainable development that requires meeting the major needs of all people and extending opportunity to satisfy their aspirations for a better life. The study aimed at highlighting negative environmental effects of industrial activities on the residents of Ninth Mile Corner Enugu. The study used convenience and stratified techniques. Convenience sampling was used on the selection of residents. Direct observations were used to identify 183 industries in the study area and were stratified into micro/cottage, small, medium and large industries. Five hundred and eighty copies of questionnaires were distributed to the residents; 451 were properly filled and returned and thus used for the study. The negative effects of industrial activities on the residents of Ninth Mile Corner were identified and classified using PCA as follows: Psychosocial effect, Urban decay, Industrial problems, Standard of living, Job situation and high cost of land.  These accounted for 58.4% of the negative effects of industrial activities on residents of Ninth Mile Corner. Government should ensure that industrial operators comply with disposal of solid wastes and effluent at designated places. Industrial operators should constantly embark on researches in order to explore innovative ways of recycling their wastes for possible re-use in order to achieve sustainable development by the industrial sector of Ninth Mile Corner.
